This is not a good thing

According to PewSitter and the New York Times the Hispanic QuinceaƱera Mass custom is taking root among American Catholics. This is not a good thing. In theory the quiceanera sounds sweet but as many high school teachers can tell you in practice it usually means one thing: the girl is a woman now and so she can quit school, start having sex and get pregnant out of wedlock. This is why many priests have simply refused to say the quince Mass.

Not all customs from the old country are worth keeping.

My Mexican pastor explained that the custom was originally a pagan one- girls were dressed up and sent to their deaths, and the whole thing was made into a "happy occasion." The Spanish allowed the custom to continue, but stopped the sacrifice of the girls. So much for the theory of the repressive Spanish- and we still have the Quinceanera to this day. I think it could be redeemed-- too much money is spent on the event, and too much focus is placed on the girl- but all in all, I wouldn't mind if it were dropped.
Why not emphasize Confirmation instead?

Something else that struck me aside from your well-stated point:

This family in the news article spent $20,000 on the Quinceanera celebration. Twenty grand to celebrate a girl turning 15!! With a hummer limo at that!! Wouldn't that money have been better saved up in a college fund for said young lady???

Very interesting commentary.

Traditionally it means she can marry.

Nothiong wrong with that!

Er, no?

As in, it is better to get married soon than to have a college education in which you by being female are far too uncritical of what professors say and in which you by being opposite sex of about half the campus are likely to start having sex out of wedlock anyway, unless you are very good at resisting social pressure!
