Rest in peace, La Stupenda

When I was about nine or ten I heard Joan Sutherland singing on TV. She had a voice that left me speechless. It was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard.

I'm delighted to say that I got to hear her live, though only once, alas. It was in Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann, near the end of her career (1988 I think), but she still sounded amazingly fresh and vigorous.

What that live performance did convey, and what no recording of hers that I know has managed to reveal, was how huge her voice was. She would have had the stamina necessary for quite a few composers (e.g. Wagner, Verdi) whom she seldom or ever touched.
