I think Archbishop Gomez did what he could. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not believe one bishop can laicize another as they are essentially peers with regards to the Sacrament of Holy Orders. I think further action (if any) must come from the Holy Father himself.
I think you're right. Unless the Holy Father or the civil authorities make a move for all practical purposes Cardinal Mahony has suffered nothing but a blow to his pride.
Restore-DC-Catholicism and Dymphna, yes, both of you are right..any laicization or eviction from the college of Cardinals must come from the Holy Father himself....
But it is a huge blow that Cardinal Mahony will not be celebrating Confirmations or acting as a representative of the archdiocese...after all the cathedral is called the taj mahony or the Rog Mahal
this move though was 3 years in the making. Zavala last year and now Mahony and Curry. He had been quietly limiting their roles in the archdiocese anyways...now it's public. Abp Gomez likes to keep in house things in house. (I stay close to the diocese since I'm from there)
I love Opus Dei...Abp Gomez is a member. I just wish they liked the TLM.
