a blow upon a bruise

The drunk driver who killed Sr. Denise Mosier was being represented by Catholic Charities in his deportation proceedings. So, when you give to Catholic Charities you are helping people who have broken the laws of our country beat the rap. Doesn't that make you feel all warm and cuddly inside?

Even the most despicable criminal has the right to a competent defense:

They may actually be innocent of the crime for which they recharged.

To rpevent excessive punishments.

It insure the truly innocent have a good chance of acquittal even when no one believes they are innocent. (Especially important these days as there are elements that would trum up false charge because one is a Christian.)

Or as a friend of mine once said, there is noting that can be said for the kid except his mother loves him, he has the right to have that said well.

To be effective providing competent defense and to be done all the time.

What worries me is that when the Church is sponsoring the defense:

If the prosecution messes up the case of the murder rapist, the defense attorney has the duty to call them on it even though he knows that onece released the defendant will go back to murder and rape. Even given the right to a competent defense that is an untenable position for a Church sponsored Defense attorney

As you noted it creates the appearance of endorsement of criminal conduct.

Yes, CC should not be involved in this sort of ministry and someone is not thinking this through, but we can give them credit for good intentions informed by totally invincible ignorance.
